HISTORY OF PAROW CENTRE

Origins and Opening (1972)
Parow Centre, previously known as Sanlam-Sentrum, was officially opened in late October 1972 by the mayor of Parow. At that time, the Centre featured around 55 shops, immediately becoming a magnet for locals. Around 40 000 visitors passed through the Centre’s doors in the first few weeks alone.

Rise in Shopper Culture (1975)
Just three years later, the Centre captured the public’s imagination during one of its legendary sales events. In 1975, queues formed overnight, with eager shoppers lining up for deeply discounted items: freezers for just R50 and trousers for 50 cents. On opening day, over 600 people surged in.

Evolution Over Time
Over the decades, the Sanlam‐Sentrum adapted its identity and role. Following its initial boom, the complex grew to adopt the community-focused service centre model Parow is known for today. The Foschini Group later set up its headquarters nearby, signalling the area’s growth into a regional commercial hub.

Community Impact
Since its inception, Parow Centre has played a pivotal role in the economic life of the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. It has provided a gathering place, a retail anchor, and a cornerstone in Parow’s identity.

Imagine a place where convenience meets community, and every visit is more than just a trip to the store – it’s an experience.
